Panel on Research as a Career

Following a public panel on undergraduate research, members of Eta heard from GW professors Christina Fink and Zoe Szajnfarber about their unique careers in research.

White House Tour

Eta was given a private tour, thanks to former Eta President Emma Hopler, who was interning at the White House.

A CONVERSATION ABOUT NATIONAL SECURITY WITH SENATOR TAMMY DUCKWORTH

This event was a public event where sisters and the public had the opportunity participate in a conversation with Sen.Tammy Duckworth. It was a well-attended event and the conversation featured questions about National Security, military capabilities and more.

The conversation was moderated by Former Vice President of Eta, Carly Nuttall, BA 2013.

International Human Rights Panel

At this private (members only) event, members had the opportunity to hear from Darcy Milburn(Human Rights Watch and CLF and Dean Celorio(UN Women and lawyer at law firm; Murphy, Hesse, Toomey and Lehane in Boston).

The event included a discussion from both women and a networking reception afterword.

The event was moderated by Abi Raj, an Eta member.

Diplomacy in Crisis: A conversation with Ambassador Anne Patterson

At this event, DPE and the Elliott School Alumni Programs hosted Ambassador Patterson in a conversation about the current state of diplomacy. It was a well-attended event that left both members and attendees inspired.

Ambassador Butenis Networking Event

The Ambassador (ret.) Patricia Butenis Networking event is a private event (members only) that is held annually by DPE. The event included speeches by each panelist and a networking reception afterwards.

Panelists included Anne Aarnes (USAID ret. Career Minister), Ambassador (ret.) Joyce Barr, Pamela M. Bates (Partner at Securitas Global Risk Solutions), Patty Brandmaier (former Senior Executive Leader at the CIA), Dr. Kiran Pervez (Foreign Affairs Officer U.S. Department of State), Helen Powell (Presidential Fellow at GWU), and Nilanthi Samaranayake (Director of Strategy and Policy Analysis at CNA).

Climate change and national security: a conversation with sherri goodman

The Climate Change and National Security was a private event (members only) with Sherri Goodman where she discussed the intersection of national security and climate change. Sherri Goodman was the former U.S. Deputy Under Secretary of Defense for Environmental Security and is now a Senior Fellow at the Wilson Center’s Environmental Change and Security Program and Polar Institute.

The event was moderated by Delaney Felkner, an Eta member.

Legal Professionals Panel

The Legal Professionals Panel was an event that Eta co-sponsored with the GW Pre-Law Student Association. The event included introductions, moderated questions and Q&A.

The panelists included Collin Swan (World Bank Office of Suspension and Debarment), Ioana Luca (IMF in-house counsel), Jeffrey Jacobovitz (clients have included numerous corporations, trade associations, and sports leagues), and Clayton LaForge (Latham and Watkins).

Europe's Nuclear Umbrella: The Future of NATO

The Europe's Nuclear Umbrella: The Future of NATO event was a public event that Eta co-sponsored with The Alexander Hamilton Society. It featured a debate about the future of NATO with George Washington University Professor Harris Mylonas, and Senior Resident Fellow at the Atlantic Council, Ian Brzezinski.

conversation with melani mcalister

The Conversation with Melani McAlister event was a private (members only) event with Eta Faculty Advisor and Honorary Sister Melani McAlister.

The event offered the chance for sisters to learn more about the field of Academia from the standpoint of Ms. McAlister, who is a professor at George Washington University, an accredited author, and an expert in her field of the US in a global context/transnational US history.

The event was moderated by Tori Avis, an Eta member.

international finance panel

The International Finance Panel was a public event, co-sponsored by Eta, GW Women in Business, and GW Omicron Delta Epsilon.

There were four panelists present: Niki Doshi (Delphos International), Janie Immanuel (Sayari), Sam Khater (Freddie Mac), and Professor Scheherazade Rehman (GWSB, ESIA)

The event was moderated by Julia Reinhold, an Eta member.

The Opportunities in International Service event was a private event (members only). A presentation given by Elizabeth Boesen, GW Career Services Officer, on short, medium, and long-term opportunities to engage in service abroad.

Conversation with Lisa A. RickarD

The Conversation with Lisa Rickard was a private event (sisters only). It was an Interview-style event with Lisa A. Rickard, President of the US Chamber of Commerce Institute for Legal Reform.

The event was moderated by Margaret Meiman, an Eta member.

Foreign policy forum

The Foreign Policy Forum was an event for Sisters to present on their respective topics of expertise in international affairs, with about 3-5 minutes for questions.

Members presented about a variety of topics, including Chinese foreign policy, the Battle of Karbala, sex tourism in Thailand, the US Foreign Policy of Religion, UXO in Cambodia and Laos, Europe-Russia Relations, and Cyber-terrorism.

American Red Cross Refugee Law Training

The Red Cross Refugee Law Training event included private (sisters only) refugee law training with Legal Fellow Griffin Ferry from the International Humanitarian Law Department at the Red Cross.

The event was organized by Eta, Professor Christie Edwards, and Joe Gibson the Program Manager at the Red Cross.

Members went on a tour of the Pentagon led by service members from the US Marine Corps and Navy.

Foreign Policy Classroom

The Foreign Policy Classroom event was held with Alumnae Irina Karmanova, who is currently working at the State Department’s Bureau of Public Affairs.

It included a private policy briefing on Asian refugee and migration issues with Asia Team Lead Dr. Hoa Tran from the Office of Population, Refugees and Migration at the State Department.

Careers in Defense: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

The event included panel of women who all work (or have previously worked) in the defense industry. Sisters heard career advice followed by Q/A session and networking reception.

The panel featured Ms. Kelly Magsamen (Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs), Major General Sharon Dunbar (US Air Force (ret.) and VP of Human Resources at General Dynamics Mission Systems), Colonel Cathy McClain (US Air Force (ret.) and Consultant for Triad International), and Dr. Janne Nolan (Chair of the Nuclear Security Working Group and Elliott School Professor).

The panel was facilitated by Melanie McAlister, Eta Faculty Advisor and Associate Professor of American Studies and International Affairs at GW.

European Regional Affairs: Perspectives from the US Department of State

This was public event featuring Greg Burton (Director of the Office of European Union and Regional Affairs within the Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs at the State Department).

The conversation was discussion-based and featured questions about Brexit, Ukraine, and the future of the European Union.

danny from north korea documentary screening

At this event, Eta hosted a screening of the powerful and moving documentary, “Danny From North Korea” at the Elliott School.

The documentary tells the story of Danny, a North Korean defector, from his life in North Korea to his brave escape to China, and his resettlement in the United States.
