Commitment to Service
Service is an integral part of being a member of ETA
We are thrilled to announce that we have officially chosen the Washington Urban Debate League (WUDL) as our new Philanthropy! The Washington Urban Debate League uses debate as a transformative educational opportunity to re-engage students and teach them portable skills such as critical thinking, research, public speaking, and advocacy that they will use in their future educational and career pursuits, and to contribute to their communities. Urban Debate programming is key to making debate accessible to students attending publicly funded educational institutions, especially Title 1 schools, where such opportunities have become scarce. We are proud to support the WUDL in their pursuit towards making debate and the skills learned from it accessible to students across all backgrounds.
Each semester, Eta volunteers with local DC organizations including Ronald McDonald House, Lucky Dog, St. Mary’s Court, Grow Garden, and Common Good City Farm. We also participate in Write Night, during which we read and and provide feedback on poems written by incarcerated youth from DC. From 2011-2015, Eta partnered with Sister Somalia, the first rape crisis center in Mogadishu, Somalia. The center provides support for survivors of sexual assault in the forms of medical assistance, counseling, education and business start kits.
